New Small Second Dwelling and house renovation

New life for a 1960s Merchant Builders house and a garden house addition to bring a family close together.
Elliston House is a project in two parts - the renovation of a Merchant Builders house, and the addition of a Small Second Dwelling. Reflecting the spirit of the original house, the new house embraces the same robust, locally sourced materials, and a broader outlook to the treetops of the estate. Through careful planning, complex restraints were navigated to create a living environment embedded within the garden while still being filled with natural light.
The Elliston Estate is one of a few larger cluster developments done by the Merchant builders in the 60s and 70s. Today its message is still clear, that suburban environments can intertwine with and respond to the landscape - one that feels in contrast to common development today.
Originally built with material efficiency and practicality in mind, the existing home holds the quiet charm of mid-century suburban ideals. The renovation seeks to honour its story by preserving its essence and bringing new life through simple alterations to strengthen its bush modern character.
Together, these two homes form a quiet dialogue that fosters intergenerational living while respecting the autonomy of each space.
