About

We begin with people and place.

We design through stories and context.

We create calm, grounded environments.

We work closely with local craftspeople.

Nüüd Studio is a Naarm / Melbourne based architecture and interior design practice led by Brad Mitchell and Kerli Valk working on both regional and urban commissions.

We design buildings, interiors and objects guided by the stories of the people we work with, and those uncovered from intimate studies of place and history. These narratives enrich a collaborative design process to create environments that purposefully embody the values of those who inhabit them and heighten their day-to-day experience.

Our projects focus on the renewal and repair of environments to create places which are calm, familiar and softly embed within garden or landscape. Ingrained in this process is an importance to work hand in hand with local craftspeople using locally sourced materials.

Process

Our process begins with an attentive reading of people and place. Through conversation, research and observation we uncover the narratives that shape each project—stories of site, history and the lives that will unfold within it. These insights guide early concepts that respond to landscape, light and context. As the design evolves, we refine spatial qualities, materials and details in collaboration with consultants and local craftspeople. From approvals to construction, we remain closely involved to ensure the project is realised with care, clarity and enduring connection to its surroundings.

Services

Nüüd Studio is a full-service architecture and interior design practice. We guide projects from early ideas through to completion, shaping places that respond thoughtfully to people, context and landscape.

1. Concept Design — the starting point of the project.
Through conversation, site study and research we uncover the stories of people and place, developing early ideas that establish the project’s direction and design principles.

2. Schematic Design — refining the preferred concept.
Ideas are tested and developed through drawings, models and imagery to clarify spatial experience, form and materiality.

3. Town Planning & Approvals — navigating planning requirements.
When required, we prepare and coordinate planning submissions and consultant input to guide the project through local authority approvals.

4. Design Development — resolving the project in detail.
A detailed approach to refine planning, materials, fixtures and key elements.

5. Construction Documentation & Pricing — preparing the project for building.
We produce detailed drawings and documentation required for permits, pricing and construction, and assist in selecting and engaging a suitable builder.

6. Contract Administration — supporting the project during construction.
We remain involved on site to review progress, answer queries and ensure the design intent is realised with care and attention to detail.

7. Post-Occupancy — completing the project.
Following construction we review the building for any outstanding works and ensure the project is operating as intended.
